There are only four basic emotions—sad, glad, mad, and scared. Sounds simple, but we can’t always communicate to each other exactly what emotions we are feeling and why. This two-page guide can help. A good tool to use together with Mind Over Moods, Aftermath of a Fight, and other tools.


Events themselves do not cause our negative emotions. Events are filtered through our thoughts about the event, and those thoughts then lead to our negative emotions. We can’t always change the precipitating events, but we can very often reframe our thoughts about those events, thus reducing negative emotions. This tool is a reference that outlines the process that your counselor will teach you in session.
